The Opera School Wales at the Adelina Patti Theatre in Craig-y-Nos Castle put on operatic performances throughout the year. The small theatre was built by the Castle's former owner, the famous opera singer Adela Juana Maria Patti to entertain her guests. Ystradgynlais Public Band was formed between 1875 and 1890 and still flourishes, with a busy schedule of performances. The band recently beat other South Wales brass bands to win first prize at Merthyr Tydfil. Cor-y-Gyrlais (The Gyrlais Choir) are based in Ystradgynlais and follow the long tradition of welsh male voice choral singing. Their musical director Meirwyn Thomas has lead them for over thirty years, during which time they have won National Eisteddfod honours. Cor Meibion Ystradgynlais, Ystradgynlais Male Voice Choir, has a history going back to 1947 when a group of miners from the local Ynyscedwyn Colliery formed a choir to compete in the Miners' Eisteddfod.
